Duluth Man Arrested, USCP and FBI Investigating

ATLANTA — A Gwinnett County man has been charged in federal court after authorities say he made violent threats against two Republican U.S. senators, according to an indictment unsealed this week.

Federal prosecutors allege that Robert Davis Forney, 25, of Duluth, left a series of voicemails in April and May targeting Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Sen. Deb Fischer of Nebraska. Both lawmakers are Republicans. The messages reportedly contained graphic threats of physical and sexual violence, including one threat directed at Cruz’s family.

The indictment, filed in the Northern District of Georgia, charges Forney with communicating threats in interstate commerce — a federal offense that carries significant penalties. The FBI and U.S. Capitol Police investigated the case, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Atlanta is leading the prosecution.

According to court records, the threats originated in Georgia and were sent to official offices in Washington, establishing federal jurisdiction. Forney was taken into custody and is expected to make his initial appearance in federal court in Atlanta.

The case comes at a time when threats against public officials have risen nationwide across both parties, with federal authorities noting a steady uptick in cases involving interstate communications. Georgia’s status as a major political battleground has also brought increased federal attention to threat cases originating in the metro Atlanta region.

Forney’s next court date has not yet been scheduled.
