ATLANTA — Two women were hospitalized early Monday after a shooting that broke out during a dispute with a tow-truck driver near Georgia State University, according to Atlanta police.
The incident happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. in a church parking lot next to the EZ Market BP on Piedmont Avenue NE, an area heavily trafficked by GSU students and residents. Police said a tow-truck operator was attempting to remove a vehicle when a man approached, pushed the driver to the ground, and then ran toward the church.
The driver’s two daughters, who work as security guards, followed the suspect. Investigators said the man turned and opened fire, hitting both women. They were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and were reported alert and conscious.
Students living in a nearby high-rise told reporters they heard multiple shots and saw people running from the scene. The location, just off campus, has seen periodic safety concerns in recent years despite increased lighting, surveillance cameras and coordinated patrols between Atlanta police and Georgia State.
The suspect escaped before officers arrived, and police have not released a description. The shooting remains under investigation.
The case adds another layer to ongoing public-safety discussions in the downtown corridor, where late-night activity, high student density and towing disputes often intersect. Atlanta police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
